« Part 12: Screw Cleats and an Extra Set of Legs Part 13 of Furnishing a Sauna Suite series no next part

Screws and Glue

The top slats are attached with screws and glued to the rails, braces, and screw cleats.

The screw cleats provide a good glue surface and make attaching the slats easy.

The outside cleats get one screw through each cleat along the inside edge and are glued to everything they touch. This is a strong glue joint since it’s long grain to long grain.

Good Results

I’m happy with the way the benches turned out.

I still need to pin the tenons on the long bench.

Applying an extra pair of legs was a good decision on the long bench. It’s super sturdy and will easily hold the weight of two adults.

Finishing Plan

The slats are sanded to 120-grit and the frame is sanded to 80-grit. I’ll scrape glue and clean up joint lines with a sharp chisel and scraper. Then I’ll sand through to 220-grit. The benches will receive three or four coats of satin marine varnish.

Next

Build the back rests.
