Pretty Simple

There’s nothing fancy on this project. The objective is to walk on splinter-free cedar, as you enter and exit the sauna, instead of a cold concrete floor. I used two 3/4” thick by 2” wide by 58”long runners to support 14 floorboards that are 3/4” thick by 3 1/2” wide by 23 1/2” long. Each floorboard is attached with stainless steel screws from beneath.

Assembly

I oiled all the pieces before assembly and lined them up against a straight 2 by 4. I used a piece of 1/2” cedar to establish the spacing between floorboards and a 3/4”piece to offset the runner from the edge .

I shot screws from underneath to secure one end first.

View of underside. I’m starting out with only two runners. I made a third runner that I can install later if needed. It seems that this setup flexes better with the slightly uneven concrete floor. A third runner would probably result in the whole assembly rocking a bit.

NOTE: I added the third runner to improve the support of the floorboards. The author suggested that two runners was enough for up to 24” boards, but I think it flexed too much. I planed the middle runner 3/32” thinner. That eliminated any rocking and yet provides support.

Assembled, oiled, and ready for install.

Installed.

It’s coming together nicely. I only sanded to 120 grit to keep the floorboards from becoming slippery. That was a good call as confirmed during our sauna tonight. It wasn’t slippery with wet feet.

Next

Build back and foot rests.

Thanks Rob! While I’ve been surging on my sauna project, my brother’s been chasing and shooting geese south of us in the fields towards Pine City.

Oh goodness that may well possibly discourage the duck from coming, I think he may be lead intolerant

I bet he would enjoy your sauna though!
