”Finnish” the Basement with a Sauna

We designed and had our home built in 2014. We anticipated finishing about 500 square feet of the basement eventually, so we had the basement plumbing roughed in during the initial build. I began finishing the basement, as a DIY project, about a year ago. In our part of the county, we only needed an electrical permit.

The focal area is the sauna. It’s a very useful 5’ x 7’ size with heat-efficient 7’ ceilings, a heavy glass entry door, electric stove with digital controls, and western red cedar used throughout.

Excellent Sauna Resource

I found “The Art of Sauna Building” to be an excellent book that was extremely helpful in designing and building a custom sauna. The author emphasized the importance of creating a very relaxing atmosphere. I planned the project with the overarching theme of a “sauna suite.”

Furnishing a Sauna Suite

This blog will focus on building the cedar benches and accessories for the sauna, changing room benches, changing room table, and a vanity base for the toilet room. Everything in the sauna hot room is built from western red cedar. Everything else in the sauna suite will be built from ash. (I obtained a lot of ash free from my Dad’s friend in Wisconsin!)
