My local MacBeath Hardwood store had a pile of ugly lumber that seemed neglected and passed-over for quite some time. My local store has been in business at that location for 60 years and so I asked how long the rough lumber had been sitting in a pile in the rafters. The answer was about 12 months. In my hand plane journey, I started with a diminutive palm-sized block plane (finger plane?) purchased for $20 at a big box hardware store. I played with it and it did some things I was impressed with, however it mostly sits unused in my toolbox. I then used a Shop Fox No 5 jack plane and it was good for about 30 seconds before I saw every flaw and felt every issue in the process of trying to put it to work. I knew before my Stanley No 8 Type 11 arrived in the mail that it would need a new blade and though not-needed, I wanted to put new Bubinga handles on it. I picked up a Type 11 blade that was 7” long on eBay: But there appeared to be something unique about it that I was not prepared to see. There is an “H” on the back of the blade.
