It is hard to believe it has been five years from when I got this crazy idea to write a book on box making. I have been a custom furniture maker ever since I was a young man. Then when I joined Lumberjocks and seen all the beautiful boxes by my fellow woodworkers, it influenced me to a high level of passion for box making.

Once I had a book layout I started my quest at first not realizing the many difficult obstacles that would stand in my way. One of the biggest obstacles was finding a publisher which would make a big difference on many different aspects. The most important to me was to find someone in the woodworking back ground. With a lot of determination I was very honored to have “The Taunton Press” as my publisher. Receiving that phone call from the editor telling me, “Yes we are going to publish your book” was the greatest news I had heard. I have learned a lot about writing a book from making sure the photos are correct to writing each building step so it can be understood by those who read it. It wasn’t an easy road but one I would travel on again without hesitation.

The name of the book has changed four times from the original title of “Stylish Boxes” to the final name “Wooden Boxes” Skill Building Techniques for Seven Unique Projects” The reason for the change is that there are so many different techniques for each box which can be used for making boxes as well as furniture. There are also speciality skills like, segmented turning, banding, carving and marquetry. The book ended up being 100 pages longer than expected with a total of 240 pages.

Right now the book is on many book web-sites for pre-order due out in October. The nice thing now is that all the work is done so now I am just waiting for them to be printed and distributed.

I really wanted to give a special thank you to all of my Lumberjock woodworking buddies for all your inspiration. Thank you very much!!!

Taunton has come a long way. They really understand what an instruction book is meant to be. Many people can write, and many woodworkers can’t, LOL! But they really know how to make things.

I’m hoping your book is a success. It adds to your portfolio. I have two books by Thomas Mosier who is not usually mentioned on LJ’s, and he’s been pretty successful. There are many like me who like the feel and smell of a book when we are reading. I can also gaze at the quality prints, such as Taunton includes. Not like having your project in my hands. But closer than my computer screen…LOL!

Since finding LJ’s three years ago, I’ve come to understand and appreciate the creativity that goes “into the box”.

Great news, and Kudos!
