I'm nearsighted, Ducky, so the glasses come off when I need to do fine work.

In nice weather, I drag my low bench outside. It's below freezing at the moment, so not much outside work lately.

Computer-wise, I've done a bit of big and a bit of little. Apple II, Cyber 205, Cray 1, PCs, Macintosh, Sun, Apollo… Mac and PC at the moment. Heard of a thing called Photoshop? Look for me in the credits. Retiring in July though. Will probably program a RaspberryPi in retirement, since when I get disgusted with it, I'll be able to throw it far away and buy a new one for less than the cost of a good dinner.

Yo DP, lucky you don't suffer from claustrophobia… or do you just take your glasses off when you go into the workshop?

Talking about bikes… you must have outside access…. check out robscastle's workshop… he brags about working out of a dolls house and has everything on wheels that he wheels out to the driveway (on non0rainy days… or he may have a bloody big umbrella) to do a lot of his bigger work.

What type of computing… PA (piss ant) little PCs/laptops/mobile of beefy mainframes? I retired (forced) from mainframes about 8 years ago and as mainframe jobs were scarcer than ducks teeth and not wanting to pull mine out I moved from the city (3K from CBD to Churchill 160K in the bush). Still miss the 0 and 1's, however, too lazy to learn a modern language so I keep myself occupied with my woddie… with the occasional software supplements.

Thanks, Tom. I prefer the quiet, but will probably be getting a bandsaw from my sweetie's dad (who has given up woodworking). Cutting ten pieces off a chunk of apple tree this morning has me convinced I'll spend less time worrying about stock prep that way. Now I need to find room for it (and for the post drill I still don't have set up).

Yeah, I work for a company that's based in San Jose, so I'm out there just about every year and get to hear the horror stories. Glad I can live and work here. With Google adding their new building downtown, traffic's going to get crazy, too.

You are not wrong on the housing prices back then and they have even gotten a lot worse to the point that an exodus from some areas has begun.

A couple of months ago I answered the front door where I was greeting by a realtor and a married couple. The realtor said that he wanted to show them our house so they could make me an offer. I said it's not for sale to which the man of the couple said you haven't heard our cash offer as money is not an issue! That, to me, took a lot of gall! I stood my ground and said "how much" ... no I told them what I said before, it's not for sale!

Another example, I just heard on the radio that to live in Marin county you need a minimum income of $125K!

The Mercury news paper reported that a landlord was moving out of the bay area and taking all his tenants with him!
The paper also reported that U Haul prices have increased dramatically IF you want to move out as that would be a one way trip and their trucks/trailers aren't coming back fast enough. However, moving in is much cheaper.

Thanks, oldnovice. I lived in California in 1995-96, but never settled in. Bay Area housing prices were too high for this midwestern boy even back then.
