« Part 15: Art books case Part 16 of Jefferson Bookcases series Part 17: Three sizes of plinths »

I needed to make a little case for some small hardcovers. It’s also the size I will need for paperbacks if I don’t put them in tall skinny cases.

If that’s hard to read, the measurements are (to hold 5¼x7¼ books)

2 – 1×6x30¼
2 – 1×6x8¾
1 – 1×8x29⅝

I didn’t have a 30 inch long 1×8 offcut, so I put two shorter ones together. They’re ship-lapped.

Otherwise it’s just like the other cases, just smaller.

Thanks, Peter. There are a few that have gaps, but so far they all seem mechanically sound, which is my minimum requirement. I’m still at the point where some days are better than others though. With any luck, my consistency will improve as I finish up the bookcases (only 12-18 more to build!)

I agree with crowie, the dovetails are very nice. Maybe it’s just my way of thinking, but tiny imperfections like your mentioned gaps, only testify to being truly hand made, which adds to the character of the crafted piece.

Thanks, Tom! I figured all along that these cases were going to be a lot of dovetail practice, and they’re doing that. Plus holding books! ;-)
