« Part 2: The pegbox Part 3 of Building something like a bass viol series Part 4: The Ribs »

Having got the pegbox in good shape, I shaped the remainder of the neck fo the most part and then the base or ‘root’ end. You may notice that I glued some mohagany onto the neck to make the root the correct length.

Back to the pegbox where I am drilling pilot holes for the tuning pegs.

And then I ream them out minimally to receive the tuning pegs which I have not made yet.

And my little mascot, Scratchy poses in the pegbox.

THere will be a delay of a few days while I build something to photograph on this project.

If you’re making a bass viol, what’s Scratchy? A violino piccolo?

Looks like good progress so far, and thanks for the tutorial, Dave!

Sometimes I remember to put Scratchy in pictures that I take as a sort of signature. It’s actually an unplayable dollhouse violin that I got as my mascot at work. The woodwind tech has a metal clarinet on his shelf. The brass tech has a small straight horn.

Looking pretty good. Am I correct in assuming the tuning pegs will be mahogany to match the neck piece?

Yes. The ribs are also mahogany as is the top of the fingerboard and tailpiece. It all ties together.
