Long Bookcase: Wood Movement + Leg Supports? - 15 replies

Thinking about building this 7’ long bookcase out of 3/4” rift sawn walnut. Two questions: 1. Am I crazy to do this out of solid wood instead of ply? The 2 vertical dividers would be dadoed into the top/bottom. The side panels would be doweled into the top/bottom. Is wood movement going to cause issues? 2. With the 7’ len...

How to cut a dado for a bottom panel when one side of the box is angled? - 6 replies

I’m building a box that has one angled side. Typically I would cut a dado to fit the bottom panel, but since one of the sides is at a 18 degree slant, the dado wouldn’t match up to the other 3. Imagine the side profile of the box looking like this: | _ \ What options do I have to put a bottom panel on the box?

How would you make this? Curved side profile meets rounded-over front panel. - 4 replies

I’m looking to build something similar to this (a synthesizer case) for a buddy of mine. But I’m wondering how to match the curve of the side profile to the round-over on the top of the front panel? Here’s another picture of a similar case:

Best way to cut a deep shoulder on one side of a tenon? - 6 replies

First time using mortise and tenon joinery. (It’s a side table.) Each of the aprons need a 1” shoulder on the bottom of the tenon, and I’m not sure of the best way to make these cuts. I don’t have a hand saw or a band saw, and I don’t think the table saw would be able to make this precise of a cut. Should I pi...

Variance in Walnut color? - 18 replies

I’ve been using a lot of Walnut lately and recently came across a few boards that look completely different in color than everything else I’ve seen. Is it just that these have significantly more sapwood than everything else I’ve used? All of this walnut came from the same hardwood dealer. Typically I’m used to dark, ch...

Shop vac too powerful for ROS? - 3 replies

I recently bought a Bosch ROS65VC-6 and have been attempting to use it with my Ridgid shop vac. The vacuum overpowers the sander, causing it to move uncontrollably unless part of the pad is off the work surface. It’s also leaving lots of swirl marks, but only when used in conjunction with the vacuum. On the Bosch, there’s even ...

When to fill a knot with epoxy? Is it always necessary? - 11 replies

I’ve seen plenty of videos about filling knots with epoxy, but haven’t seen anything addressing when to fill. Is it always necessary? I’m building a couple floating shelves for our kitchen. One of the boards has a knot with a crack partially through. Do I risk the board being unstable if I don’t fill the knot, or is it...

How can I flatten boards wider than my jointer? - 28 replies

I’ve seen multiple videos using this method for flattening boards wider than your jointer, so I decided to try it on a project where I’m building 7’ wide floating shelves. Sanded through walnut veneer. Will a water based stain even it out? - 9 replies

Here’s what I’m working with. It’s walnut veneered plywood with a solid walnut frame. When sanding the glue squeeze out from where the two meet, I ended up burning through the veneer around much of the ply. I’ve got a can of General Finishes water based walnut stain. Wondering if applying it to the entire project will ...

Best way to attach shop vac to Bosch ROS65VC-6? - 7 replies

I’ve got a Ridgid shop vac with a 2.5” hose. I’m trying to connect it to my new Bosch ROS65VC-6 The sander comes with an adapter that fits either 1-1/4-In. and 1-1/2-In. hoses. Am I better off using my existing hose (it’s not terribly flexible) and an adapter or going with a different hose all together? The 2.5̶...

How's this for a sharpening system? - 6 replies

I was recently given my grandfather’s Stanley no. 5 and a few Narex chisels, along with some old beaters. How’s this for a start? -Ki...

Why did this piece of walnut split and how to spot it in the future? - 8 replies

Picked up some 8//4 walnut that had a 3” crack in the bottom. Cut that piece off plus a little extra and used the rest to make an end grain cutting board. Little did I know the crack went much further through the board than was obvious. Here’s a pic: I was still able to make the cutting board, albeit a much smaller one than in...
