Gray wood...what is it? - 2 replies

I thought this blank was interesting. It is gray throughout as I discovered when drilling it.It is not stabilized and has no odor. Also, it not exceptionally hard. About as hard as maple.Anyone know what it is?

Shortest piece on jointer - 14 replies

Sometimes the simple things don’t register in my brain right away.Recently I have been shopping for a disc sander to square pen blanks before drilling. It is much better if they are square rather than rectangular. Most of the sanders I see run too fast in my opinion. I have one set up on the lathe using a 6” faceplate and at 650 R...

Tried something different on a pen - 3 replies

I got one of the Longwood style pens and decided to try a different approach to the ‘gripper’ area.I coated the 1” short section with some clear rubberized spray. It gives the rubber feel to the end but still shows the wood. BTW, these kits are a bit more of a challenge for me as I do not use a mandrel. The jury is still out o...

Aromatic Cedar - 8 replies

Anyone ever see this kind of pattern in the sapwood of cedar?I picked up a rough board of this and began cutting some pen blanks. The sapwood has strange short sections that give it an interesting pattern.

Green half bands - 3 replies

Just playing around with some extra green acrylic. This turned out better than I expected. I may use it instead of turning it away.I used a 60 degree cut half way through the blank.I see one of them was not cut quite deep enough. Probably because I didn’t follow through with the sled.Adds a little zing to a rather dull looking wood.

Odd looking wood - 3 replies

I’m not sure if this is some wormy maple or something else.I have several that are similar but those don’t have as many worm holes.

Cedar - unfinished - 5 replies

I have a request for a pen and pencil set using aromatic cedar. However, the request is to not use a finish on the turned blank. My guess is that they want it to smell good. What problems could be expected aside from the fact that the wood could be easily damaged and would retain dirt and oils from the hands.I’m tempted to decline the job...

Is this wenge? - 15 replies

I was quite surprised that as soon as I put a coat of CA finish on this it turned almost completely black. It’s also a bugger to keep it from bleeding onto the white maple. This was another test to see if I could get the rings even. It is real close and probably as good as it gets with my setup.

No-Lock Spindle Washer - 9 replies

I bought one of these 4 months ago and have been using it every time I put on the scroll chuck or faceplate. But I think maybe it is the wrong size or not a good idea for my lathe. There is no step in the shaft behind the threaded area and the washer does not center. It is always as shown when the chuck tightens. What I think is happening is tha...

Please help ID this wood - 7 replies

I got this in an assortment and there is no documentation on what the woods are. Most of them I can identify but this one has me puzzled. At first I thought it may be birds-eye maple but it is light as a feather and tears easily when turned. Looks great finished though! I also thought it may be buckeye burl but if so, it is from a tree that ...

So, if this forum is not supposed to be politically oriented and the coffee shop was closed for basically this reason, why are there political ads running at the top of the pages?

My crosscut sled...with miter jig - 9 replies

I built this a few weeks ago and have been trying to figure out a way to attach a miter section instead of building a separate sled. This seems to have worked out good. I used a piece of 24” wide white melamine board. It is about 30” long. I put a stop on the underside so that the sled would not go in either direction far enough ...

jointer blade question - 4 replies

This is a closeup of one of the 3 blades on an old 4” jointer that I an restoring. The blades feel sharp to the touch but all 3 of them have this secondary bevel that is dead even all the way along the edge. These look like they are perhaps the original blades and it does not look like they have ever been sharpened across the full width ...

New jointer project for the summer - 2 replies

I picked up a vintage 4” jointer for a mere $17 last weekend. It is rusty but seems to be all intact. I’m going to set up an electrolysis vat and try cleaning it that way. That process seems to be just the ticket for this thing.

Box joints....finally - 7 replies

Well, I think I have this figured out. This is my first full thickness test piece. Lots of tweaking.Actually, these were cut to half the thickness first and then the full thickness. Some of the cuts show a step where something was not quite seated I guess. With a little more practice, this may begin to look good.Used a shop made router jig that sl...

Question on metal lathe tool - 11 replies

Hopefully there are some folks here with experience with these things.I got a freebee boring bar this weekend as part of a package deal.It is a Valenite 1/2” x 6” with a place for a carbide insert. My hope is to find some inserts to use this when turning small pieces of brass and aluminum. However, I cannot figure out for sure whic...

7/16" hole saw...sort of! - 1 reply

I suppose it qualifies as a hole saw although it isn’t being used quite that way.I needed a way to make a setback cut that was dead center to the hole drilled in the pen blank. My previous attempts at this have not gone well. There has always been an alignment problem in the end result. This, I believe will be the ticket. I found a steel sl...

A simple solution - 1 reply

Sometimes it just takes a while for these things to occur to me.I made these 2 containers, or turned boxes, and had some issues when boring the holes.I was having some problems getting the larger hole for the coupling to be centered with the smaller hole that goes to the end.In both cases the sides were uneven as you rotated the top. I realized...
