    The table opens in the middle through the use of wooden slides and accepts an 18" leaf. A ¼ inch cherry strip was inlayed into the aprons of both the table and bench to help it blend with the kitchen (wife's request). I finished the table/benches with 15 coats of clear Fuhr #380 (water based) finish. I used an HVLP spray gun to apply the finish and sanded the final coat to a mirror surface. My family has been using the table now for about3 years and it looks as good as the day I finished it.

    Charlie,

    Just poking around the site and saw that you are from NOLA. I live in uptown. Always good to meet someone else from the area and just wanted to say hi.

    That is interesting.
    I always thought, that was one reason I'd never go to a retirement home, no shop. That puts a whole new spin on things. Very cool.
    OOPS, guess where I meant to post this? LOL. During signing in and returning to the discussion I must have hit the wrong button. Guess I can't delete, so I'll leave it here instead of changing the subject, like I meant to leave a message. Senior moment. Maybe that home would be a good idea, sooner than I expected. ;}

    Charlie: Congratulation on being a Lumber jack for 3 woodfull years. I love your boxes they are outstanding. i will be making some in the next couple of weeks. I have a question. Why is the year 1958 at the end of your name? I was wondering if that was the year you were born, because it was a great year for me i was born in 1958. Thanks

    Hi Charlie. If you don't know the answer to my question, I am betting you can direct me to some people who can.

    What is the trick(s) to setting hinges on a small box for instance, to ensure that the lid will be 100% square and true? That seems to be the single hardest and most frustrating facet of the job for me.

    Do you set the hinge on the lid or the box first? Any tricks will be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Michael
