Ron Campbell and the Grand River Woodturners Woodturners Retreat

Yes a woodturners retreat. This retreat is designed to give you the woodturner, regardless of ability a chance to turn with a mentor. We have 10 mentors who are willing to teach you their specialty with a hands on class. Each class is 4 students and the mentor. We will provide lathes, chucks and some tools. Each class will have a list of tools that are needed for each class. We will also have off lathe classes. Embellishment of different types, patina, copper and silver leaf, carving, piercing, and several others. I am working to get someone with experience in segmented work to do a power point.
The schedule of event is a gathering Thursday night July 9th starting at 6:01 PM. We will gather to discuss events of the weekend and introduce ourself to each other. At that time we will set up an Instant Gallery in the Garage.
Friday and Sat morning we will gather at 8:01 and start our first classes. Classes will run 90 min with a 20 min break between classes. Yes there will be some run over time that is why 20 min between classes. We will have 2 classes Friday before lunch. Lunch will be burgers and hot dogs. Grill your own and they will be provided at no cost. We will have two more classes in the afternoon and the classes will end at 4:01 PM.. We will then have open shop until 9:00 Pm or until the mosquitos run us off. Lunch on Sat to be provided and still working on that lunch
More info will be forwarded to you regarding classes, tools and supplies that might be needed for the classes.
Sunday we will run classes from 9:01 until 1:00 pm No lunch on Sunday
We will provide water and refreshments all day.

Classes so far:
Jim Beaman pop top boxes 4 per class on the lathe hands on
Jim Beaman spindle turning 4 per class on the lathe hands on
Jim Beaman finial turning. 4 per class on the lathe hands on

Tom Sampson turning spheres Hand on 4 per class

Matt Haber off lathe embellishments 6 per class

Jeff Grill natural edge bowl and beginner bowl class Hands on
Jeff Grill turn it thin with a light. A little more advance but for most all to try
Ron Campbell Large Hollow Forms Demo only. Learn to drive the Carter XL Hollow Roller Small hollow forms. Hands on 4 people.
Ron Campbell patina and copper. Bring a piece to put copper leaf and or copper paint on and patina and dye the copper. 8 per class. We will do this Friday and Sat.
Ron Campbell apply Rust to a piece. Yes painting a piece with iron paint and then acid to make it look rusted. Bring in a piece that you would like to experiment with and rust it.
Ron Campbell and the Carter Perfect Sphere jig. Demo only as we have one jig
Ron Campbell Bangle Guy Bracelets. Turn a bracelet that you can take home and give as a gift. This will be a two part class as the glue must dry on these bracelets. There will be a $ 50 charge for materials.
Dave Miller Pen turning Dave will teach you how to turn a pen. Wall Street II pen.

Alumilite presentation. Yes we will have a representative at the event on Friday. At 1 PM he will be doing a demo on casting. Both pen and larger pieces like hybrid boxes. This is only a 45 min demo. It will cover molds too. This is a one time demo, one day only. There will be a pressure pot and materials there. We can cast several Items including Cholla Cacturs from the Sonoran Desert. I have room for motorhomes or campers on the property without hookups. Yes you could tent camp. There will be a porta-potty
There are several restaurants in the area for breakfast and dinner. A list will follow.
There is only one hotel AmericInn and it is about 6 miles from the venue. The venue is my pole barn that is 38 by 50. The lighting will not be the greatest but will work. My shop is only 14×32 and can be used for the off lathe and Hollow Roller Xl. There is a porch that is 14 X 24 it can also be used for off lathe and turning discussions.We are working on having wood there for sale. I have called for Cherry, Ambrosia Maple, Walnut, and spalted beech, and Flame Box Elder. These could be in log form and green.
There will be other items there for sale such as high speed dental tools, sandpaper, glue, carbide cutter replacements.

3 days of hands on and hands off instruction, demos, lunches and making new friends will cost you $ 50.00 for all 3 days
The word has spread that I am doing this event and the response has been much greater than anticipated and this must be limited to 50 people. Sorry but it will be the first 50 with checks to me.

A bit far for me Ron but boy this sounds like a real fun weekend for all attending, thing is with these events you have to make the most of every opportunity available & get involved.
I’m sure it will be a great success mate, have fun & make heaps of shavings

Like others said I would love to attend. But travel + lodging does not make this cost effective. I wish you the best. If you repeat let us know.
