So Myself and Jimthecarver took a trip to the mill today to check out Socalwood’s(Rob) operation with hopes of getting some nice lumber and to meet a fellow LJ. And I’m not sure I can put into words how impressed I was, but I would like to say a few things about my experience today. First and foremost, Rob is truely a class act. From the time we got there, I felt comfortable and welcome. He walked us around the yard and showed us A LOT of lumber. Huge Selection! We toured his workshop. Awesome! Not so much as having all the bells and whistles but in practicallity, and what you can do with carefully selected tools. And very unselfish with information. Valuable Information! Honestly, I’ve done some little woodworking projects and some carving, and it’s my desire to do much more, but seriously this guy is doing it now. And not everything the “conventional” way. At least not from what I’ve learned through my studies. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Rob’s operation is the pro-active “green” philosophy he’s implementing. From the lumber sawn from reclaimed woods to the use of composted sawdust, which was a very interesting discussion in itself, spread in his garded to grow vegetables and on his one day forest.(saplings now):) Which virtually eliminates all waste. Oh, and I forgot to mention the prices. I’ve never seen or heard of a better deal. I’ll be buying my project surplies there from now on and I would strongly recommend any LJ’s in SoCal to check them out and decide for yourself.

Happy woodworking,

Glad you had fun! I understand what your saying,

I was there with my wife this past Sat and spent 3 great hours with Rob and his doggies. We had such a great time and bought some great wood! Will be back there many times. I wrote a blog on it as well. He is amazing and I’m thinking of taking a weeks vacation and apprentice up there for free, but then he know I’m not a woodworker for sure. Like he kept saying, “he wasnt a wood worker either”, yea right!
