« Part 1: Gifts for grands Part 2 of Swivel Pencil Box series no next part

Time to get started making the 2 pencil boxes for my grands. One Purple Heart and one zebrawood, and I decided to make an extra with some Spalted maple. After cutting the blanks. I roughed out the pockets on the scroll saw, leaving a small amount for routing smooth, not realizing how easily the Purple Heart would splinter when routing it.

In the future, I’ll spend more time cutting to size on the scroll saw.

Routed the pockets and resawed some material for the box bottoms and the sliding top. Glued the bottoms on.

Used the jig I built during the prototype to cut the 30° compound angle to separate the 3 top boxes. Glued the short cuttoff piece to the respective bottom and fastened the long section of the top with a screw creating the pivot. Shown here with the hard maple prototype.

The spalted maple ended up opposite rotation from the others as I chose to flip the top to get a better match on the grain.

Good progress.

Need to cut and install the top stop, cut he lid to length and mill the finger detent. Then a bit of sanding and finishing.
