Well got all my little bits from the personal challenge pic a home. As you can see the box is now called Little Bess (after one of our cats, black, Porgy and Bess). The first thing to do was re-saw the Ebony into six boards (though how you can call something 38×36x3mm a board escapes me) so I squared up the offcut on the disc sanderSet up the table saw with an existing 3mm zero clearance jig, see also two push sticks (scrap MDF),And sawed it into 6×3mm Boards, no flitches thats bette...

Hello again. Day two of the challenge. I decided to measure up everything and arrange it before me to see what materials I have to make this box.It didn’t take long to decide on a four sided box. I will make it vertically grained as this is where I have most length in the flitches and I’ll loose at least 2mm height when I seperate the box halves, top from bottom . Hell you most likely know of it, its probably American. Comes in a 1oz bottle. This was the result.Over 50mm of usable wood.I had a slight change of mind on the des...

Hello minature box junkies everywhere. I was going to take some good advice and close it down for the weekend but at the moment I feel like a kid at Christmas. I can’t wait to see what this box will look like or even if it’ll be a total disaster. First things first. I cut the rectangle out of the guide for laying out the top and now I had a window onto what would be the best part of the glue-up to use.I marked it up and proceeded to cut it up. Using a scrap bit of MDF as a back...

Part 5: Day 5 . Much trepidation!

Hello all this has been the most fraught day of this make and the most exhilarating. The cramp from my arm died down after about the fourth beer so I wasn’t too bright this morning when I started again. However I set about making the border for the top. I cut each piece roughly to size, with a knife. Like cutting matchsticks. Then shaped the mitred ends on the disc sander (180 grit disc). You can just about pick out one of the side pieces nearest the disc on the lefthand side. Before ...
