I have severe arthritis in my left hand and sometimes I have a hard time holding my router steady. I purchased a Bosch Colt 1.25 hp palm router and thought it would help. with the small base I was having the same problem. I found a larger base online that will take standard PC. guide bushings and what a difference. I can hold it steady as long as I go slowly. I never used a 5/8” core box bit but I have used 1/2” and it works fine. Hope this helps, and it sucks getting old.

Even without a hand troubles I have struggled to keep the router pressed against the fences of a juice groove jig. I have thought about making an inner fence that sticks down with double sided tape to keep the router base trapped between the two and keep it from wandering.

Not sure how much experience you have ,but many of my students who have this problem are not routing from left to right? I also recommend for better control using a “D” handle router. Lastly I also find it’s easier to use a guide to help stay inline ,see links below. As far as vibration in router bits,1/2” shanked Router bits have less vibration.
