Some of you fellow lumberjocks may remember my last entries as I was just completing my garage/shop build when I accepted a job back home and left my very nearly complete shop that I spent so much time working on. Well I’m back! We moved back close to home in a rental property for the short term while we contemplated the building of our new house and shop. We looked into buying a house but due to the gaining economy, houses very selling for crazy prices (both very good and very bad for us). After a lot of looking and stressing, we decided to build as we could get what we wanted for not too much more than what we would settle for in a house. We found a plot (3+ acres) of land owned by some friends in a very good location and bought it for steal. I realized the only way we could afford what we wanted was for me to take up the responsibility of general contractor. So we went down that road and here we are today. Six weeks into construction we just set trusses on Friday of this week. I decided to start the shop build at the same time to both save money in the long run and to get it done by my contractors instead of painstakingly doing all the initial work myself. After some consideration, I decided to build a stand alone woodshop as we are building an oversize 3 car garage on the house and I probably would not be able to afford the same size garage/shop at this time and probably didn’t need it. But I built the woodshop bigger than the last, at 836 sq ft vs 750 sqft. I built the shop much the same as the last with large picture windows high up on the wall but this time I added a large French door since there will be no garage door to carry out big projects and I added scissor trusses instead of standard flat trusses (I like the grand feel the scissor trusses provide). The outside of the shop will match and compliment the house in all aspects. Right now I have walls and trusses up with the roof planned for Monday and singles later this week. Here are some pictures. I will continue to update as we go.
