Part 1: the lathe...part 1 setup
After encouragement from a number of LJ we bought the HF 12×36 lathe. After seeing the nice setups others have posted I decided to try to dress ours up a bit for my husband (although to be honest I hope to utilize it too!). I assembled the stand and then cut and drilled some holes in aluminum angle to go between the feet. That holds my 2×4 base floor which is also screwed to a plywood sheet (the plywood is under the feet…counter sunk the hardware so it can rest directly...
Part 2: Set up and turning!
The lathe is setup and my husband has made a number of small items (drawer knobs, case handle) as well as a couple bowls, candle holders, and most recently a vase. The video suggestions from the LJ have been extremely helpful. Really appreciate this forum and all the help. As pointed out when I first posted questions on buying a lathe, the tools are a definite investment but lots of enjoyment in producing projects.
Part 3: Vase from a limb
Big limb came down in our woods and my husband decided to cut a piece to turn on his lathe. This bud vase is red oak finished with bees wax. When hollowing the top, a section broke away and flew across the shop. Glued it back together and sanded. Hard to pick out the issue as it falls right along the dark grain section of the neck. This shows the grain of the vase. This is a bit dark but shows the “injury” that was repaired
