Our store-bought dresser is slowly coming apart, and we havent found a nice enough replacement for it. It is hard to buy wooden furniture, when you know you could make it yourself, if you had the time. Anyway, after couple of years back and forth, I got the go-ahead. Knowing it might take a full year in calendar time to get it finished.

The design had to be just square and simple to keep the time-to-market reasonable. And I would buy the internal drawer frames for the same reason. So basically, I am making a box… And it will look stupid. I drew a plan in Sketchup. A box is not that complicated that I would need elaborate plans, but the store-bought drawers require the internal measurements to be within one millimeter or so. My plan is to install separate ”runners”, rather than screw the metal drawer slides directly into the frame: The frame will move in that direction, so the wooden runners will allow the frame to move, and keep the metal slides firmly in place(pictures to follow once we get there).

Here is the rough plan. The outer frame will be thicker: As mentioned this plan was made to get the internal measurements.

In the meanwhile, I have been surfing pinterest to get inspiration for something, that will allow the simple box not to look stupid. And be easy to make. Here it is

So now I have the inspiration part covered. The easy-to-make part might need some further work…
Ok. I am not trying to recreate this look. Its just ”inspiration” you know? The plan is to identify a nice vector file, and pay somebody to laser-ingrave it to the drawer fronts.

I got the raw materials – this pile was EXPENSIVE. There might be some extra, but I am not worried because I have grand plans for matching nightbtables (AND a bed once I get my woodworking mojo going again).

I was supposed to have my ”box” all done over the holidays, but when the precious few days I had allocated for this came about, I found out that the jointer was out of order… At this point I dont know when stars are aligned next time, so no need to hold your breaths for the next blog posts!
