Part 1: The Beginning - My Space and My Tools

05-02-2013 02:09 PM by AngieO | 21 comments »

As some of you know, I started my woodworking journey last summer in August. While I’ve always had a desire, and even bought my first tool back in 1995, I didn’t actually take my first real steps till then. It’s very interesting how things happen. As a crafter by nature, I’ve always had an outlet for my need to create things. But it wasn’t till a sweet dear friend of mine introduced me to Pinterest that I took the plunge. (I’ll have to thank her for that so...

Part 2: The Project and The Wood

05-04-2013 02:17 PM by AngieO | 13 comments »

It’s another beautiful day in Southern Indiana. My kids are all gone for the day and I’m home alone. What do you think I’m going to do today??? LOL… YEP! I’m going to be in my shop all day. First, since I know I won’t come in for a while once I get out there, I thought I’d give you Part 2 of this series and talk about the the Project and the Wood that I’ll be using. As I said before, if you look at the projects I’ve posted, I’ve d...

Part 3: Progress update... There hasn't been much :(

05-14-2013 03:47 AM by AngieO | 7 comments »

Well… my plans haven’t gone quite as I wanted them to. I had expected to get my bench done last weekend. However… over the last week I’ve spent a lot of time taking care of some things for my mom. We recently lost my step dad and so she’s all alone now. I’ve also had to do LOTS of yard work. SO… what I have done is cut some scrap practice pieces out and have tried my hand at cutting the mortises for my bench. I had some issues with my table saw and...

Part 4: Moving along a little quicker now...Time to make the first cut.

06-28-2013 01:48 PM by AngieO | 20 comments »

Hello! My bench has been a slow build. But… I’m taking my time with it. I don’t want to get in a hurry. I have to admit that I got a little intimidated by this project. Until now I’ve been dealing with smaller boards and projects that were pretty simple. Most of my boards have been salvaged from pallets and have been pine. This time I had these big 8’ rough cut cherry boards. For a long time those three boards just sat in my shop while I wondered what I’...

Part 5: The end pieces are almost done.

06-29-2013 02:21 AM by AngieO | 13 comments »

I’ve been busy working in the shop today. Actually got a lot accomplished. So… my last entry I showed you that I used my circular saw to cross cut my 8’ cherry boards to a rough length. I had actually completed this step earlier in the week. Over the last two days I kept right on moving. I had already planed those boards down somewhere between 7/8” and 3/4”. Yesterday I started planing them down to 3/4”. My planer is actually pretty cool and has 3 stops ...

Part 6: Where do I go next? No new progress. And some questions...

07-17-2013 02:37 PM by AngieO | 15 comments »

Well… I haven’t made any new progress. I did some shop clean up and moved some things around. I have a few unfinished projects in the shop that I need to handle and get them out of the way. I am using the shelf under my bench to put the “in progress” projects. So the most I’ve done on my bench is to move it under there so that I don’t have to keep moving it from one spot to another to get it out of the way. This was probably a bad idea. LOL! Out of sight...

Part 7: Looking ahead to figure out what kind of finish I want

07-24-2013 02:34 AM by AngieO | 15 comments »

So… I bought a compass over the weekend so I can do my curves on my bench. Also… A friend of mine gave me a jigsaw. He had three… all the same kind… so he gave me one. Cool! So I’m close to cutting my end pieces. But over the last week I’ve been checking out Charles Neil and some videos of his on finishing. Got me really thinking about my finish on this thing. I hate the finishing process. I get these projects built and get to a point where I’m pre...
