« Part 3: Slow progress Part 4 of Modern Desk series Part 5: Still at it »

I will try again after encouragement from LeeRoyMan.

I ebonized the appropriate parts. I raised the grain by wiping them with a damp cloth, scuff sanded with 400G, applied TransTint Black dye 1:16, scuff sanded, applied Minwax Ebony and sanded again. I waited 1-2 days between these steps to ensure that everything was completely dry. I may decide to apply another coat of the Minwax just to be sure that it is really, really black.

Then I glued up the remaining 4 boards to make the desktop.

While the glue was curing I decided to ease the edges on the legs with a 1/8” round-over bit.

Finally, I have a confession to make. :( I must have gotten carried away with the Domino and didn’t realize it until today. The mortise was about 5/8” in length so I drilled into one end of the mortise and glued in a 3/8” plug. Sawed it off flush and repeated the process on the other end of the mortise. I think I can hide it a bit better with a dab of glue and sanding dust and will post another pic. It is located toward the top front end of one of the legs so it is in a fairly visible location. I thought about cutting off the board but decided to try hiding my blunder first. At this point, I am optimistic that this will work.

I have also done most of the sanding on the legs but there is no need to show anybody pix of that. haha I will try to provide updates a little more frequently now that I made it through my busy non-woodworking week. Thanks for bearing with me.

Thanks for hanging in there!

Looking good, nice fix with the plugs.
I don’t think they will show at all, especially with the dark color.
Nice call on the 1/8” roundover.

Glad to see you persevered Art and continued to post. Your latest project is boomin’ along nicely. But then I’d expect nothing less. Keep up the good work.

I was worried that dark dye/stain would muddy up that beautiful wood but the result makes for a very formal look that usually is reserved conference room tables with AAA veneer. Classic Art in action (and welcome back! 8^)
