Part 1: Bench
03/05/2012 -I found this Bench on the Internet that really interested me. So I decided to Make it. I got some Curly Maple for the Seat and some Jatoba for the legs and beams. I started on it last week and got the Maple seat glue up, its 14 inches wide and 50 inches long. I plane it 3/4 inch, it is such beautiful wood. Next I plane the beams to the same thickness, they started out as 15/16’s and what I didn’t realize was when I went to make the Tenon, I sized it to 3/8’s not ...
Part 2: Beams
I finally got some time to work on the beams and the legs yesterday. I got all 4 of the legs glued up finally and started on doing the Mortising for the legs, I am doing this mostly by hand and it ain’t easy that is for sure. I finished the tenons on the beams, I used a dado blade to cut them, It was about two inches for the tenon by 1/8 depth, so the thickness was 3/8’s. then I used a drill and a hand jigsaw to cut the mortises, not a very neat and clean way to do it for sure...
Part 3: Bench Seat Taper
I Finally got some time to work on the Bench today ! woo hoo ! I scraped and sanded the top and bevelled the bottom half of the seat, I did it all manually with a smoother planer, block planer, and a japanese saw. The supports for the Cross braces for the Beams turned out nice, I love to do it by hand, it is so much fun! and it looks really nice, pictures tomorrow. I am building the Cross beams right now and I am not to sure about the design yet, I like it but it’s just not complete to ...
Part 4: attaching the Beams
Well this will not turn out as I expected but it is becoming something very interesting to say the least. I am still happy with the Decisions I made about the joinery and the Carving of the legs. Although it is a pretty rough, there are some messy spots on this mortise and tenon joints for the beams. I have just done the one side so far so I have no idea if it is going to even look level or even sit level I am doing my Best on trying to make sure it’s level, when I put the legs together...
