Well, I am not sure what a marquee sign is exactly. If I were to build something like you have in the picture; I would approach it this way. I would use plywood. The plywood thickness would depend on the strength needed for the final project. Let’s say 1/4 inch for the top and bottom and 3/4 inch to build up the sides.

A heart is the same shape on the left and right sides. To conserve material I would make a template of one half of the heart and cut 4 pieces of the 1/4 inch to become the top and bottom of the hollow heart. The width of the heart shape to meet your needs. For this example make the width 6 inches. The top to bottom measurements also to meet your needs. Lets say 36 inches. Next create a second and third template by just copying the inside edge 1inch and outside edge 1 inch of template #1. Cut out prices of templates 2 and 3 to meet the height needs of your project.

These will be used to build up the sides. Every two stacked pieces would be 1.5 inches. Use as many as needed to meet your thickness requirements.

Start with the bottom pieces and glue and clamp them together. Same with the top layer.

Once dry place the bottom layer on the work bench. Build up the inside edge and outside edge with the one inch pieces. Tack and glue them as you go along. Lastly attach the top with tacks and glue.

Plywood has defects and holes. You will need a sandable wood filler to fix these. Big holes and defects should be fixed by using multiple layers with sanding in between.

Finish sand to at least 250 grit, Prime and paint.

Let me know if you have questions and good luck!

Hello Tim,

Marquee sign or Circus letter , lately they are on demand on different events. My concern of this heart is the sides. How to assemble with the top ? It’s clearly a language barrier between us and I don’t know if my English is poor or my woodworking vocabulary is too low. I will send you a photo with a letter which I assembled to see the concept of my construction, perhaps after you see the photo it will be much easier for you to guide me.

All the sides components are milled in the middle and the top slides in the milled area.

Looking forward to receive an answer from you.

Have your say...
