My father recently passed away and I now am working on his shadow box so I can display it properly. The flag is your standard military flag. I have completed all my design work, but now I can’t deside on which type of wood to use. I am perhaps just a step above the novice catagory when it comes to woodworking. I am considering using ‘Purpleheart’, but I have never used it before. My experience is primarily with cedar or oak. I am looking for suggestions and maybe some guidence. Thanks for your time everyone.

Check my projects page. I have three flag boxes, Cherry, Walnut and Mahogany. I also have a frame made of Purpleheart, these my give you an idea on which wood to choose.

Maple, Walnut, or Cherry gets my vote. Oak looks great, but the purpose of your box is to display something of great personal importance. Spend the money for something a little bit more.
