Lathe Stand Width

I am about to build a lathe stand. I am wondering how wide the table portion should be? My thought is that the narrower the better, within reason, so that when using tools the handles do not hit the table and you can get the right angle on the tool rest. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

On my bench the center of the lathe is 6” from the edge. Take a look.
