This is a drum set that I recently helped a friend refinish. The set had previously been stained black with a very light clear coat over top. We proceeded to remote all the hardware, sand the shells down with 120, 220 & 320 grit sand paper.

The painting system we used is the dupli-color Candy Apple Red lacquer based paints applied using the Earlex 5500.

I hope to be posting some additional pictures as I am able.

I can’t even imagine the complexity of this job. Doesn’t the finish effect the performance?

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!

Mics_54: They say that the paint does not change the sound, but it seems that my friend has noticed that the tone has changed a little bit. Lucky he likes the sound better! After about 14 total coats, you would imagine the sound would be a bit different.

The complexity really came down to research and trying to figure out what to paint it with. Since we ran out of time, the set has not yet been sanded to 2000 grit or buffed out to a high gloss shine yet, so if he ever wants to change the set, all we have to do is buff out the finish and the paint job will actually look much better!

3 Base
3 Metallic
2 / 3 Candy Apple Red Lacquer (depending on how heavy the first coat went on)
5 Clear Gloss Lacquer

Great job! The drum set looks like new and more stunning. Like the striking red finish.
