Orca whale

A friend approached me with a project a little while back…he asked if I could make an Orca whale for his daughter’s birthday out of wood from his property. It’s her favorite animal, and made from trees off his property it would have some extra meaning too. Never one to shy away from a challenge I said of course I’d give it a go. He gave me one picture to work from and a glued up block of wood (Butternut).

First I cut the side profile on my bandsaw, then glued the pieces back on (to have a stable base) to cut the top-down shape. After a lot of sanding and shaping it ended up resembling a whale…

I wanted to put more detail in the tail, but I resisted because I was terrified of breaking it off.

Just a fun little challenge that I wanted to share.

Pretty darn COOL! Nice job. I particularly like the way the grain turned out.

Nicely done. I’ve been wanting to try my hand at some carving. I might have to try that.

I like the way the grain seems to emanate from the dorsal fin.

I love what you have made. You have inspired me to have a go at the very same, from plywood. Thank you.
