Pen with Yarn inlay

Following my experiment with making a pen from news paper (it is in my older projects) I started playing with other materials and now have combined wood with cotton yarn.

This is a piece of cedar reclaimed from a shipping pallet. I turned the base form and used a parting tool to notch out the areas for the yarn. I then carefully wound on the yarn and saturated it with thin CA. Once it was completely kicked I was able to turn and polish it just like any other stabilized material.

In the last pic you can see I have also made full pens out of just the yarn. it is much the same process minus the wood blank. I find that lighter weight yarn works best (this is sock weight) and natural fibers. Acrylic yarn does not wick the CA very well. if kicks the glue to fast to soak in.

Hmmm … SWMBO saw this (she is a knitter), so looks like I’ll be making some. Thanks, DonR (:>{)

My Herself is a fiber type as well, that is how I have sock yarn on hand!
