I designed this project a few weeks ago and just got around to cutting it last night. It took about six hours from raw lumber to finished project. I was able to stack cut the duplicate parts so that made it go faster. The box is Peruvian walnut and the fretwork is poplar. This walnut is some of the deepest dark brown I have ever seen. The grain is nothing spectacular but the color is incredible. I wanted great contrast in the woods and this combination is perfect in my eyes.
Since I am primarily a scroll saw guy I look for color more than grain when I’m shopping for lumber. Most of my projects are so small that the grain is not always that visible.

Great project Steve. I’m sure this will be a popular download on the blog. Great color on the Walnut and really nice contrast with the maple.
