Well, it’s been a week since I signed up here. The journey you are about to undertake with me is not for the experienced woodworker, but for the absolute novice. You see, I have NO WOODSHOP!!!.......hence the kewl name Dust4brains.
However, I do have a two car garage where my wifes truck resides and this will never change. My side of the garage has relegated my truck to living on the driveway. At present the space is full of junk such as an old water heater…..had to change it out about 2 months ago when it decided to resemble the Mississippi river….and various other pieces of antique refuse (JUNK) and my prize WalMart fishing gear….The fish love it!
Over the next few weeks I will be posting photos of this miniscule space/garbage dump as my plans unfold to convert this into a superb fold away woodshop. I also plan to park my truck inside for the winter so stay tuned for some recycling, innovation and space saving ideas on a trickle feed budget. Don’t worry, safety will still be paramount!
Will it happen? Well, I know most of us out there love to talk about our Powermatics and Festool Domino’s (That’s for you Marc Spagnuolo…...TheWoodWhisperer.com), but I will be going low end for tools. My table saw will be a cheap portable one when I get it. After this the budget bottoms out….but that brings a challenge and kicks in the creativity. Meanwhile I’m going to read up and learn all about wood as Marc has inspired me. Great Job Marc and Nicole! I love your podcasts.
OK, I’m off to the library to read up tomorrow on wood…...someone told me it grows on trees….yeah right, like I’ll believe that’s true!

First of all, welcome aboard. I’m sure over the next few weeks you’ll get a lot of good help / suggestions / comments as we all witness your quest. Building a shop in a confined space takes a lot of patience and thought. Even us guys who are fortunate enough to have bigger spaces can sure learn more. I look forward to your photos and blog as it moves forward.

Welcome. I, too, am a novice. I’ve been in the process of putting together a shop for several years but I really haven’t completed many projects. Now, it looks like i might have a little time for woodworking. I joined LJ about a month ago and have found it a constant source of inspiration. The folks here are friendly and helpful. Thisw is the first place I go when I sit down at the computer.

I think your beginning a good adventure. Also, you may want to check http://craigslist.com and see if there are any good used tools in your area. You may be surprised.

Welcome to lumberjocks. This is a wonderful place to look around, and get ideas from everyone else. When I got married in 1965, i started to buy a few things i needed from garage sales. Now i have a lot fo tools. Just an idea. I then sold a few things that i didn’t need any longer, cleaned them up and sold them for a few dollars more. Some of the older tools are stronger than the new ones now. Best of all, have a good time and enjoy yourself.

Marc has some recent links that you should check out. One particularly is relevant… a guy put a very compact shop in his garage in a way he can still park 2 cars in there. It was featured on finewoodworking.com.
