Project Information

A while ago I was taken into a lapidary/bead shop.( I was the innocent bystander…my dear wife was buying some beads and stuff…) While she shopped I browsed and discovered some lovely polished stones and decided there and then that they would make unusual finger lifts on a box.
This is the first, a brown green agate that measures 40 mm diameter and it is in step with the green suede pigskin lining. Polished stone and polished figured wood work well together. The agate is held in place with a strong 2 part epoxy.
The lid is made from a Fijian hardwood and the box was made from recycled **************************************** floorboards.
The box measures 290 mm x 180 mm x 75 mm high.

Nice work Ruddy!

I can only agree with the previous comments.
Working with Aust Timbers can certainly produce some spectacular results.

I brought back some zebra stone from the NT with the intention of incorporating into a box, I guess I should get on with it!!

Nice finish on the lid a intrigueing grain complemented by the Quilt effect.

That's sweet. I love the creative use of non-wood things into a good woodworking project. That's why I like a lot of Andy's boxes with his use of metals and stones and odd things.
That's a really nice piece and the top board has some beautiful "wave" figure to it.

Ruddy - very nice work!

I was wondering if you could provide a few details about how you created the quilted pattern on top. Thanks!

That looks great! I love the texturing. Did the texture enhance the grain?

Very nice combination of materials and textures! I especially like the lid, with its wavy/quilty look, and of course the stone!

Cool looking box especially the diamond pattern top/lid and the use of polished stone is a great idea and adds that special touch .
Looks like you used a router bit to create this pattern followed by sanding .
