Figured Black Limba running through the planer - shop tour wood processing

02-10-2019 12:41 AM by Steve | 0 comments »

View on YouTube I took a short video clip of a new run of 8/4 African Black Limba running though “Old Ironsides” (my nickname for the vintage Newman Whitney industrial planer in the clip – it’s a behemoth but a workhorse). Bringing in Black Limba is a roll of the dice because there is “no standard for ””Black” or “White color”. In other words, if bad colors show up, there’s often little recourse because it’s subjecti...

Prairie Style Mosaics #1: First Things First

05-05-2018 01:04 PM by EarlS | 8 comments »

There were some folks that were curious about how to make prairie style mosaics like the one that was on my Box Swap submission. I’m writing this as I work on another mosaic for an extra box that was started for the swap. Hopefully this will help. For me, this isn’t a quick process. Check on my website to see when these exotic woods arrive. Also keep a look out we will be posting future projects using this wood. :)ht...

I’m starting this blog as a prelude to a Project posting – the project is a work-in-progress Outdoor Bench, based on the Fine Woodworking (FW) May/June 2008 article. I have acquired the plans from Fine Woodworking, and am now in the ‘build’ mode. The primary purpose here is to detail for interested Forum members, the different woodworking that arises from 1) an Exotic wood – Jatoba; 2) an Outdoor vs. Indoor project;, and 3) some trials and tribulations associa...

Eureka! Receipt says what wood I bought!

07-08-2009 05:16 AM by thiel | 4 comments »

The other day I enthusiastically bought some fancy wood since I was making small stuff and wanted to try out some other material. And then I promptly forgot what I bought. The receipt appears: —Bolivian Rosewood—Figured Santos Mahogany (“Bee’s wings” I think)—Mesquite (knew that) Any tips for working with these beauties? I’ve already resawed them down to get bookmatched 1/2 inch boards…. The mahogany in particular seems a bit brittl...
