Super Idea!. If you can find a filler that’s the same color as the wood you can also fill the holes after you put the finish on. The filler doesn’t stick to the surrounding varnish and you can wipe the excess of right away and you’re done.
-- The smell of wood, coffee in the cup, the wife let's me do my thing, the lake is peaceful.

I usually use glue and sawdust of the same wood when filling holes and cracks. You are right with the filler after the finish is put on!
